Bruno Fernandes was back to his very best for Manchester United in their 4-2 victory over Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

Not only did the Portugal international thump home his team’s second for the day with a short-range header in the dying moments of the first half but he also came to the rescue after the break to set up the fourth goal for Anthony Elanga to make it four for Man Utd and to confirm all three points.

Indeed, this isn’t the first time that Fernandes has come to Man Utd’s rescue this season and on top of being a fantastic talisman for the club, the Portuguese midfielder is also the Old Trafford side’s leading playmaker too.

So much so that Fernandes could still be in for a shout at breaking the Premier League record for most assists in a single season. But how far off is he right now?

Could Fernandes break the Premier League record?

The current record holders for most assists in a single Premier League campaign are Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne, who both bagged 20 in a single season for Arsenal and Manchester City respectively.

So far this season, Fernandes has bagged an impressive 13 assists in all competitions. But, crucially, only six of those have come in the Premier League campaign.

As such, the Portugal international now has the slightly daunting task of picking up no less than 13 assists in the remaining league games between now and May if he hopes to even match the record set by Henry and De Bruyne.

However, to the Man Utd player’s credit, 13 assists in the remaining 12 league games is not only achievable for a player of Fernandes’ quality but also potentially well within reach if Ralf Rangnick’s side can go on to finish the season in good form.
