Pep Guardiola has told Manchester City fans that he is ready to quit the club if he is not wanted.

The Spaniard came under fire following comments made after he watched his side dismantle RB Leipzig 6-3 in the Champions League in midweek.

Guardiola issued a rallying cry to fans and seemed to intimate that he was not happy with his side playing in front of an Etihad Stadium that was not entirely full.

Guardiola clashes with fans

Supporters, though, were not happy with his comments, with Kevin Parker, the general secretary of the club’s official supporters’ club, indicating that Guardiola should “stick” to coach and that he “doesn’t understand the difficulties” that fans are facing at present.

A spikey Guardiola responded to these remarks in an infuriated fashion.

“I am not going to apologise for what I said. What I said was we need the support. It doesn't matter how many people come but I invite them to come and enjoy the game because we need the support,” he said.

“I never said: 'Why didn't you come?' Mr Parker should review the comments I've done the day after, but I will not apologise to him.”

Guardiola even went one step further and threatened to leave the club if the fans are not satisfied with him.

“I will never have a problem with my fans. If I have a problem I will step aside, I am one of them,” he said. “Since day one I've tried to do my best.”

What did Guardiola say about Man City’s fans?

Following the victory over Leipzig, Guardiola said: “I would like more people to come to the next game on Saturday.

“We will need the people next Saturday, please, because we will be tired. I invite all our people to come next Saturday, 3pm, and watch the game.”

Man City will face Southampton on Saturday, having played in front of virtually full crowds in their two previous Premier League fixtures.
