Chelsea have spent over €1 billion since Todd Boehly became the club's owner in 2022 and the Blues have given long contracts to every single new signing.

Enzo Fernandez was signed for a British record fee of €121 million during the 2023 January transfer window, while they exceeded the €100m mark yet again with the purchase of Moises Caicedo from Brighton just a few months later.

The Blues have proven their ability to attract top players since before Boehly, with Roman Abramovich's 19-year era at the club a glittering one indeed, but they haven't always been able to keep their players around on their own terms.

In 2022, Antonio Rudiger left on a free transfer for Real Madrid while Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso headed for the other side of the Clasico divide, joining Barcelona, also free of charge.

Boehly has a "Vision 2020" philosophy for the club, and that strategy has relied on signing young players on long-term contracts having - initially - found a loophole in FFP regulations.

Now, Chelsea have a roster of players with their future at the club secure but the sheer length of these contracts will make it difficult to offload players who are under-performing. This will also have a knock-on effect with regards to Financial Fair Play.

Ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window, Chelsea do have a few important players on soon-to-be expiring contracts that they have to make decisions on.

Thiago Silva's contract is up in July. He turns 40 later this year and it is looking more and more likely he will be released on a free transfer.

Conor Gallagher's deal runs out in 2025 and contract talks are not making much progress. Chelsea could decide to sell to raise money to meet FFP requirements.

Romelu Lukaku, on loan at Roma, has a contract that expires at Chelsea in 2026. The Blues will try once again to sell him permanently this summer.
