When does the contract of every Chelsea player expire?

Romelu Lukaku, Arsenal v Chelsea, 2021-22

Chelsea have operated as arguably the smartest club over the past few months. They managed to sell over €150 million of talent this summer, which funded their move for Romelu Lukaku.

Not only that, but the recent sales of Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata ensured moves for Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, among others, were feasible. The Blues have spent plenty of money recently, but under Thomas Tuchel they were able to win the Champions League in 2021.

With the club building for both the present and the future, some have questioned why young stars were let go, but several deals, such as Valentino Livramento and Tammy Abraham, have buy-back clauses included, while the Blues simply have so many academy graduates that some had to be let go.

However, with many younger signings being made, the club have managed to tie down most stars to long contracts. Some, of course, need to be renewed, but many are contracted at the club for several years to come.

There are currently five Chelsea first-team players, in the Premier League squad, who's contract expires in the summer of 2022. Taking out Saul Niguez, who is on a season-long loan, and there are four players.

All four are key defenders as well; Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, and Cesar Azpilicueta are the players in question, and the Blues are currently in negotiations to renew these deals. Christensen looks set to sign a new contract with the club, and that has reportedly progressed the furthest out of the four players.

If the Blues can't get them to sign a new deal, then they are free to negotiate pre-contract deals in January, and they'll lose them for free next summer. That is why it's vital that new deals are sorted quickly.

It's also worth noting that Marcus Bettinelli, Trevoh Chalobah, Marcos Alonso, N'Golo Kante, Jorginho, and Ross Barkley all see their deals expire in 2023, so if a new contract can't be agreed for them, then they'll enter the final year of their deal next season.
