Who is Sergio Gomez? The flying Anderlecht wide man wanted by Man Utd

Manchester United have identified a left-back target for the January transfer window in the form of Sergio Gomez.

The Anderlecht wide-man has only been with the Belgian side since the summer after leaving Borussia Dortmund but rumours of a transfer away have already been catalysed by his outstanding performances.

Gomez has had a nomadic career so far, but could finally be ready to make the step up to al elite side.

Gomez has developed into a fine left-back at Anderlecht despite spending the majority of his career beforehand as an attacking midfielder. He can also play on the right.

How good is Sergio Gomez?

One major positive about Gomez that stands out is his versatility as he has played at left-back, right-back, left midfield, right midfield and even occasionally as a central midfielder.

Any suitor will likely deploy him at left-back, though as that is where he has flourished.

From left-back this season, he has an outstanding record of 13 goal contributions in 18 starts in all competitions.

Gomez has scored five himself and set up a further eight, highlighting how creative he can be bombing down that left wing.

The Spaniard is a product of Barcelona's La Masia academy and so possesses a natural command over the ball as well as great passing ability.

He made the brave decision to move to Germany with Dortmund and actually made a couple of senior appearances before a two-year long to Huesca back in Spain.

In the summer of 2021, he earned the move to Anderlecht and it is in Belgium where he has enjoyed the best football of his senior career.

After he signed for Dortmund from Barca, sporting director Michael Zorc said:

"Sergio Gomez is undoubtedly one of the best players of his age in the world. We've been interested in him for some time and are happy that he has decided to join Borussia Dortmund despite offers from many top European clubs."

At international level, he has represented Spain over 50 times throughout the various age groups and is in line for a call-up to the senior squad.

The list of suitors for Gomez is long and illustrious.

Manchester United are leading the race for his signature at the moment, but other clubs who have reported interest include Everton, Southampton, Ajax, Inter, Villarreal, Lille, Monaco and Rennes.
