Celtic’s prospects of landing Evan Ferguson in the January transfer window have increased further with comments made by Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini towards the Ireland international.

Ferguson moved to Roma on loan from Brighton in the summer but has struggled to impress in Serie A. He has scored only three times for the Giallorossi since his summer switch – including twice against Celtic in the Europa League.

And his prospects of staying in Italy beyond January look slim after he was called out by Gasperini after a 2-1 loss to Juventus in Serie A on Saturday.

Asked why the 21-year-old was left on the bench to start the game, he said: “Ferguson isn’t convincing me. Even in the second half, for a long time. He hasn’t quite got into the swing of things yet, along with others. But we have a very solid team. Dybala and Soule were served very well and have superior technical quality. I would make the same decisions again.”

Underlining his point, he said that he will be looking to sign attackers in January.

“Whoever started the game is who I think is doing best. It’s clear that Roma is currently trying to improve and strengthen themselves in that area of the pitch,” he told DAZN.

Evan Ferguson: Celtic’s dream January signing?

While this is a blow to Ferguson, it’s great news for Celtic, who are set for a busy January transfer window.

Centre-forward is one area of the squad that needs improvement, with questions over the future of Daizen Maeda and ongoing concerns over the ability of Kelechi Iheanacho to remain fit.

Although Ferguson has not been at his best level of some months now, in part due to injury problems of his own, his arrival would be seen as a major coup at Celtic Park.

Celtic, meanwhile, face a delicate transfer window with the situation over manager Wilfried Nancy still highly uncertain.
