Scott McTominay set to win Footballer of the Year

Man Utd, look away. Scott McTominay is now the red-hot favourite to be named Serie A Footballer of the Year.
The Scotland star enjoyed a sensational end to the season that saw him play an outsized role in Napoli's Scudetto triumph.
His heroics, which included scoring the crucial opener in the final game of the season, saw Napoli beat reigning champions Inter to their fourth Serie A title in club history.
Napoli and fellow Man Utd reject Romelu Lukaku were in target on matchday 38 against Cagliari to seal the championship, with Inter just one point behind the Partenopei.
Napoli set for unlikely Scudetto
Antonio Conte took charge of Napoli last summer, looking to reignite an ageing squad that, having won the 2023 Scudetto under Luciano Spalletti, endured a disastrous 2023-24 campaign and finished 10th.
After being forced to lose star striker Victor Osimhen (on loan to Galatasaray) and then having to sell the club’s other superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (to PSG in January without a proper replacement), few gave Napoli a prayer of launching a Scudetto challenge.
But anything is possible when Antonio Conte is your manager. Having won league titles at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter when all were coming off periods of crisis, Conte is always capable of over-performing.
And a key reason for Napoli’s title charge has been McTominay.
McTominay joined Napoli from Man Utd last summer for just €30.5 million and has been a revelation in Italy.
The Scotland star scored 12 goals (all from open play) and delivered four assists in 34 Serie A games. He netted 13 goals in all competitions.
He was the highest scoring midfielder in Serie A, and only nine players in total (all attackers) notched more goals this season.
The 28-year-old formed a brilliant midfield trio with Stanislav Lobotka and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa - with Billy Gilmour also impressing in his appearances in the team, too.

McTominay played the most advanced of the trio, proving to be a constant goal threat with his late runs into the box, his clinical finishing and his aerial threat.
The 28-year-old was already idolised in Naples, and he has now reached God-like status after Napoli went on and won the Scudetto.
Due to his exploits, it's hard to see anyone but McTominay being crowned Serie A Footballer of the Year.
He had the performances, the numbers, delivered when it mattered, and he has the trophy now that Napoli got the job done.
In a season where few Serie A players really stood out from the rest, McTominay certainly shone brighter than others.
He also scored more goals this season from open play than Man Utd’s entire midfield.
Former Premier League legend Paolo Di Canio famously remarked earlier this season that Man Utd's directors should be arrested for selling McTominay.
"I would go to those at Manchester United to arrest all the directors – how can you give away McTominay?," he said back in October.
United are enduring a disastrous season without McTominay.
They are currently 16th in the Premier League and spurned their final hope of getting into the Champions League by losing the Europa League final to Tottenham of all teams - Spurs are 17th in the table.
How they must regret selling McTominay.
