Mario Mandzukic is on the brink of signing for AC Milan on a free transfer, FootballTransfers understands.

The 34-year-old has agreed in principle to join the Rossoneri on a short-term contract and is expected to undergo a medical over the next 24 to 36 hours.

It has yet to be decided whether Mandzukic will sign a contract solely until the end of the season, or if there will be an option or obligation for another year.

Milan have been scouring the market for a low-cost striker to ease the burden on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has only just returned from two months out injured.

Mandzukic has been a free agent since last summer when his contract in Qatar with Al-Duhail was terminated after a disappointing spell in which he scored just two goals in 10 games.

The 34-year-old had moved to Qatar after four outstanding seasons at Juventus during which he scored 44 goals and won four straight Scudetti.

Milan are hoping that his experience will help the club in their own surprise Scudetto challenge this campaign.

The Rossoneri find themselves top of Serie A, having lost just one game all season.

They travel to Cagliari on Monday night hoping to take advantage of the fact that Inter play Juventus on Sunday evening.

Milan have already signed Soualiho Meite on loan from Torino this month, while they are also expected to bring in a centre back – with negotiations for the loan of Fikayo Tomori from Chelsea also at an advanced stage.
