Cannavaro has joined Lazio from Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao FC, where his father has been the head coach since 2017.

According to an official announcement on Lazio’s club website, Andrea has returned to Italy for his studies, and has joined the Biancocelesti’s youth system to continue playing.

  • Lazio currently sit third in the Campionato Nazionale Under 17-A, behind only Parma and Bologna. The league, however, has been stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Andrea will no doubt be keen to emulate his father’s successful playing career, in which he won the World Cup with Italy as captain, La Liga twice with Real Madrid and the UEFA Cup with Parma. Additionally, he beat Zinedine Zidane to the 2006 Ballon d’Or.

However, Fabio Cannavaro never won Serie A during his playing days, something that Andrea will surely want to achieve if he makes the step up to the professional game.

This move signals yet another case of a son of a legendary Italian player joining a club in Serie A. There have been several high-profile recent examples, such as Daniel Maldini, son of Paolo, and Federico Chiesa, son of Enrico.

Whether Andrea can break into the first team like those two names is yet to be seen, but with the Cannavaro name on his shirt, he’s got every chance of doing so.
