Celtic boss O’Neill confirms transfer ‘progress’ as THIRD January signing nears
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed the club is in discussions to sign two wingers, strongly hinting that both Fares Ghedjemis and Damir Redzic are both transfer targets for the Glasgow giants.
Speaking after Thursday’s 4-2 win over Utrecht in the Europa League, which secured Celtic’s path to the playoff round, O’Neill confirmed that the Hoops are in active transfer discussions over a move late in the window.
Celtic have already added Julian Araujo and Tomas Cvancara on loan from Bournemouth and Borussia Monchengladbach respectively, and O’Neill has confirmed another new face should be arriving at Celtic Park imminently.
When the names of Ghedjemis and Redzic were put directly to him, he did not deny talks.
“You wouldn’t be a million miles away,” he told the media.
He was asked how confident he was that the deals will get over the line and said: “Percentage wise? That I don’t know.
“It could be one or the other. I don’t think we’re in a position [to sign both].
“I’m more hopeful than I was yesterday. There’s been progress today [Thursday] on certain things.
“I don’t want to be cryptic. I’d hate to say something is absolutely certain and then it fell away.”
Ghedjemis vs Redzic: Who should Celtic pick?
Frenchman Ghedjemis, 23, currently plays with Frosinone in Serie B. He has been a prolific scorer for the club this season, netting eight goals across 21 appearances and chipping in with a couple more assists.
Out of contract in the summer, Ghedjemis’ has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €900,000.
Redzic, on the other hand, is 22 and plays in Slovakia with Dunajska Streda and is regarded as one of the strongest players in the league, also earning an ETV of €900,000.
He is also a prolific scoring winger. Already this season he has seven goals to his credit in the Nike Liga, in which he has played 14 times.
- Farès Ghedjemis
- Damir Redzic
According to data analytics firm SciSports, the two players are closely aligned in terms of their profiles. Ghedjemis acts as slightly more of a classic winger than Redzic, who has a tendency to play like an inside forward.
The Frenchman is also thought to have a marginal edge in terms of his current skill level so is arguably a better bet for Celtic, particularly given his contract is winding down.
