Celtic receive official striker transfer message
Celtic have been urged to complete the signing of Callum Wilson amid rumours he is in talks to mutually terminate his contract at West Ham United.
The 33-year-old joined the Hammers on a Bosman deal in August, following his departure from Newcastle United, and he has started eight of their 20 Premier League matches so far this season.
However, Wilson was excluded from the club’s matchday squad for their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday and he is now in negotiations over leaving the London Stadium this month, as per multiple reports.
West Ham have already added Taty Castellanos and Pablo to their striker ranks since the beginning of the January transfer window, and it’s understood they are willing to cut ties with Wilson, who has scored four goals in 18 games for the club so far this term.
Celtic are known to be in the market for a new centre forward and it has been reported that former fan favourite Kyogo Furuhashi could be set to secure a loan move back to the club from Birmingham City this month.
Despite this, ex-Celtic defender Alan Stubbs has urged Martin O’Neill’s side to finalise a deal for Wilson if he becomes available on a free transfer.
Celtic receive Callum Wilson transfer message
“I think he's quality, there's no doubt he's quality. If Celtic were to get Wilson, and he is playing to the levels that he can be, he's the best striker in Scotland,” Stubbs told The Daily Record.
“There's no doubt about that. I know he's been on a pay-per-play contract at West Ham, and that's gone. To be honest, a six-month contract at Celtic at the end of the season, for me, is not a gamble.
“He's somebody who knows he can score goals. He probably fits the profile of a player that Martin seems to get the best out of as well. Martin will have in his head a profile of certain positions, what he's expecting from it.”
Stubbs added: “When you're going into a market that you've not really been involved with over a number of years, there's an element of luck involved. I think there's an element of luck involved in every transfer.
“But if Celtic are spending £10 million on a player, they have to make sure it works. It has to be a guaranteed success. I think that's why the focus for Celtic, in my opinion, should be that they have to go for more tried and tested experience.”
