Celtic’s prospects of signing Andy Robertson have received an enormous boost with the news that the Liverpool defender’s prospective move to Tottenham has broken down.

Spurs had hoped to land the 31-year-old left-back this month but the €5.75 million (£5m) deal was dependent on the Reds being able to find cover.

According to Sky Sports, they have been unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma, and the deal to sell Robertson has, therefore, reached breaking point.

The Serie A club have themselves been seeking a replacement for the Greece international, but with just a week remaining of the transfer window, they have been unable to do so.

With finances not an issue in the deal between Liverpool and Tottenham, this was seen as the only hurdle blocking Robertson’s move to North London – a move that would have ended Celtic’s hopes of signing the Scotland star in the near future.

Robertson likely to leave Liverpool

Robertson remains likely to leave Liverpool in 2026, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

The arrival of Milos Kerkez at Anfield has seen him knocked down the pecking order, and despite the Hungary international struggling to entirely convince since his big-money summer move from Bournemouth, he has the confidence of manager Arne Slot.

Celtic have emerged as a potential transfer destination in the summer, when Robertson will be a free agent.

A boyhood fan of the Parkhead club, the former Dundee United star could well make his way back to the Scottish Premiership at that point.

Arne Slot on Robertson situation

Slot has already confirmed that Liverpool will not allow Robertson to leave without cover first arriving.

Speaking after Saturday’s 3-2 loss against Bournemouth, he said: “I need all my players. I always knew that another 90 minutes for Milos Kerkez against an intense Bournemouth side was not a possibility so I already knew I had to bring Robertson in.

“But I had already made one substitution, so you only have two windows left so I brought him on at half-time to make sure Kerkez stays available for the rest of the season. I have to manage that. The last thing we need is another injury.”

Liverpool’s stance is, therefore, blocking Robertson leaving immediately to Tottenham but opening the door to the possibility of a summer switch to Celtic.
