Celtic receive official transfer message after Evan Ferguson 'green light'
Celtic have been told to “do everything possible” to sign a top-quality striker during the upcoming January transfer window.
The Hoops have endured a tough start to the 2025-26 season and new head coach Wilfried Nancy is expected to be backed in the market next month.
Celtic are set to be fairly active when the winter window opens on 1 January and the centre forward position has been identified as a top priority amid interest in Wessam Abou Ali and Louis Munteanu.
Former Celtic winger Bobby Petta has now weighed in on the debate and he has urged the club to dip into their pockets and sign a new striker.
“Kelechi Iheanacho is the best striker at the club,” Petta told The Sunday Post.
“We could all see the difference he made to the team when he was on the field in the cup final last weekend. They missed him when he had to go off injured. The focal point was lost. It's a pity he hasn't been available too often due to injury.
“Johnny Kenny has made his contribution in the past few weeks and he needs to get his confidence up and running again. He is raw, but he has plenty of energy and wants to succeed. He needs time to be spent on him to be coached to improve his overall game.
“In the transfer window, I'd imagine the manager will want a striker with clever movement who can hold the ball up.
“And, of course, be able to put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis. Such players are not easy to find and rarely come with anything other than a hefty transfer fee. This is a position in the team that can't be ignored. Celtic must do everything possible to get a quality striker in.”
Evan Ferguson to Celtic?
It comes following reports that Evan Ferguson could be set to join the club in January.
The Republic of Ireland star is currently on loan at Serie A giants AS Roma, however he has been tipped to return to Brighton & Hove Albion next month amid rumours that Manchester United outcast Joshua Zirkzee is set to replace him in Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad.
