Celtic braced for huge Premier League transfer for 'world class' star
Celtic have been hit with a major blow amid reports that their star man, Daizen Maeda, is looking to leave the club in January amid interest from Premier League sides
Maeda has been a revelation for the Scottish giants since joining the club in 2022, having scored 33 goals in all competitions last season and being named the PFA Scotland Player’s Player of the Year.
However, according to TEAMtalk, the 28-year-old grew frustrated after seeing Celtic turn down a number of approaches in the summer from several Premier League clubs.
Maeda is said to have felt ‘sidelined’ in contract talks, with his current deal set to expire in 2027, and was ‘overlooked’ for a big move that could have boosted his chances of making Japan’s 2026 World Cup squad.
An unnamed ource is quoted as saying: “He’s given everything for Celtic, but he needs a fresh challenge. The rejection stung, and he’s made it clear: January or bust.”
Celtic are understood to be ‘reluctantly open’ to Maeda’s departure for the right price, which is believed to be close to his ETV of €13.6 million.
Premier League quintet set to make January approach for Maeda
Five Premier League sides have been named with an interest in Maeda, with Brentford said to be ‘leading the pack’ for the forward’s signature, although Everton are among their rivals.
Leeds, Wolves and West Ham are also thought to be in the race to sign Maeda and it is expected that Celtic will be given significant offers to consider in January.
A move to the Premier League is described as a ‘dream’ for Maeda but it would be a bitter loss for Celtic, with former Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers having described the Japanese star as ‘world-class’.
Maeda has provided three goals and two assists for Celtic so far this season but his side sit seven points behind leaders Hearts, having seen Rodgers resign dramatically last month.
