Next Rangers manager: Leading candidate revealed as big Gerrard and Dyche updates drop
Steven Gerrard and Sean Dyche are among the favourites to be the next Rangers manager after Russell Martin was sacked on Sunday.
A 1-1 draw away to Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership was the final straw for the Gers board as they sacked Martin, who managed to win only five of his 17 matches in charge at Ibrox.
Under intense pressure from fans, the Glasgow giants were forced into a change after just 123 days.
Rangers now appear ready to backtrack, with Gerrard, who reportedly came close to taking the job in the summer, now primed for a return to Ibrox, transfer insider Ben Jacobs reports. Dyche, though, seems unlikely to move to the Scottish side.
“Steven Gerrard is a leading candidate for the Rangers job, but senior figures at Ibrox are waiting to hear if he wants to return and if it’s financially viable,” Jacobs reports on X.
“Gerrard rejected Rangers’ approach over the summer before they hired Russell Martin.
“New sporting director Kevin Thelwell has also sounded out Sean Dyche. The pair worked together at Everton, but Dyche is not thought to be keen.
“Hearts manager Derek McInnes is another potential option, even though the current Scottish Premiership leaders will fight to keep him if a formal approach is made.”
Gerrard an increasingly strong favourite
The Rangers managerial situation is one that is developing rapidly, with Gerrard increasingly coming into the viewfinder as the top option for the Ibrox side.
Sky Sports also reported that Dyche is simply “not interested” in the job at this point.
Gerrard, who has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January, enjoyed a strong spell at Rangers previously, which saw him in charge of the Ibrox side from June 2018 until November 2021. He won 64.8% of his matches and picked up the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title before moving on to Premier League side Aston Villa.
