Real Madrid lost a legend last summer when Sergio Ramos departed them to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, but the evidence suggests that it was the right time for the Spain icon to depart.

PSG have had their problems with their new signings this season, with Lionel Messi not hitting the heights that were anticipated of him and Georginio Wijnaldum failing to produce any level of form, yet there is little doubt that Ramos has proven to be a worse acquisition than either.

After playing only 21 times for Real Madrid last season, he has featured on only five occasions for PSG this time around. These statistics are worrying for the Ligue 1 club given that the deal Ramos is on runs until 2023.

The latest news for PSG is even bleaker regarding the centre-back. After missing the first leg of the Champions League match with Real Madrid, the 35-year-old is missing out on a return to Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg. Indeed, that also means he is likely to be absent for the upcoming Ligue 1 matches against Bordeaux and Monaco in the interim.

Ramos' PSG nightmare

Meanwhile, he is chewing up wages at a rate of around €1 million per month. Even given the money-rich status of the French club, this is an unacceptable rate of return.

Having signed in July, he has earned a total of €8m from PSG, despite missing 31 matches this season because of injury.

Even worse, he will have cost around €1.6m per appearance, one of which ended prematurely as he was sent off.

Just how much meaningful football he will play before the season ends is questionable. If PSG go out to Real Madrid, the answer will be no more than he has already managed.

PSG invested heavily in Ramos, but it is not a transfer that has worked out.
