Vinicius Jr forces Real Madrid to CHANGE transfer plan
Vinicius Junior has admitted that he wants to sign a contract extension at Real Madrid, despite substantial transfer interest from Saudi Arabia.
The Brazil international has just 18 months remaining on his current contract with Alvaro Arbeloa’s side and negotiations over a new deal have stalled in recent months amid Vinicius’ lofty wage demands, as exclusively revealed by The Transfers Podcast.
Last year, Vinicius informed the Real Madrid hierarchy that he had no intention of finalising fresh terms with the club due to his relationship with head coach Xabi Alonso, however the Spaniard was sacked earlier this month, following a defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, and Vinicius is now eager to extend his spell at the Bernabeu.
“I want to stay here for a long time,” the 25-year-old told TNT Sports Brazil (via The Athletic) after Real Madrid’s 6-1 win over AS Monaco in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
“I have a year left on my contract and I’m very calm. I trust the president and he trusts me. We have a very good relationship, and we will reach an agreement at the right time.”
Real Madrid’s transfer plan likely to change
Vinicius’ desire to sign fresh terms at Real Madrid will likely force Los Blancos to change their transfer plans for 2026.
It had been widely reported that Arbeloa’s side were set to sell Vinicius Jr to Saudi Arabia for a substantial fee and attempt to reinvest that money into a pursuit of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.
However, a move for the Norway superstar is extremely unlikely to take place if Vinicius remains at the Bernabeu, with Real Madrid instead expected to prioritise the addition of a new central midfielder.
The club are still yet to sign a replacement for Toni Kroos or Luka Modric, and rumours suggest they have identified the likes of Kees Smit (AZ Alkmaar), Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea), Joao Neves (Paris Saint-Germain) and Angelo Stiller (Eintracht Frankfurt) as key targets for this year.
