Barcelona target Flick favourite: €35m star has already hinted at transfer
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has identified Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck as a target, according to Spanish media.
The Blaugrana lost Inigo Martinez in the summer and opted not to replace him, instead putting their trust in the options already at the club. However, going forward, Barcelona could look to dip into the market for a defensive reinforcement.
Given their persistent difficulties when it comes to registering players, the Catalan giants remain focused on market opportunities, and journalist Adrian Sanchez now reports that Nico Schlotterbeck has been identified as just such an opportunity.
The Borussia Dortmund centre-back is out of contract in 2027, which means that the Bundesliga side will have to cash in on him next summer if they can't convince him to sign a new deal.
Handing Schlotterbeck an extension is a top priority for Dortmund as he is the club's best defender and one of their three captains. However, the player has already confessed that he will only renew if BVB can match his ambitions.
Flick wants Schlotterbeck reunion
The 25-year-old told WAZ when quizzed about his contract situation last week: "BVB will always be my first point of contact, and then we will have to see what happens in the coming weeks and months.
"Of course, it's a big difference if you are 11th in March [like last season], which is not my standard, or if you're playing Champions League like this season."
Barcelona feel that, if Schlotterbeck doesn't renew, they can get him on a cut-price deal next summer. His current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €35.6 million.
Flick is intimately familiar with the defender's game, having handed him his senior Germany debut in March 2022. He would go on to make 11 appearances under the 60-year-old.
However, Sanchez reports that Bayern Munich are also attracted by the potential availability of Schlotterbeck. The journalist states that the Dortmund defender wants to win silverware and is seriously considering leaving the Black and Yellow.
