Real Madrid want two popular stars GONE as Alonso wields the axe
Real Madrid want to offload popular defenders David Alaba and Ferland Mendy, according to a report.
It has been a big summer in Spain's capital, with Los Blancos appointing Xabi Alonso as their new head coach. Florentino Perez has backed the Spaniard with three high-profile signings, and Alonso hasn't shied away from making big decisions.
Rodrygo was merely a substitute at the Club World Cup, while young striker Gonzalo Garcia was promoted to the first team. The latter's exploits - winning the competition's Golden Boot - have earned him a bumper new deal.
While Alvaro Carreras, Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold have joined, veterans Lucas Vasquez and Luka Modric have departed. If it were up to Real Madrid, though, there would be more high-profile outgoings before the end of the window.
At least that is according to The Athletic, which reports that Real Madrid now deem defenders Ferland Mendy and David Alaba surplus to requirements.
Real Madrid want Mendy and Alaba gone
It is claimed that Real Madrid no longer need the two left-sided defenders after the arrivals of Huijsen and Carreras. Moreover, both have struggled for fitness in recent times, which is only reinforcing the feeling that they are now dispensable.
The report goes so far as to suggest that high-ranking figures at the club are 'keen to see' the pair leave. However, those same people take a 'pessimistic' view of the chances of this materialising before the window slams shut.
Alaba, in particular, is a popular figure within the squad, but he has massively struggled to recapture his previous form after his year-long recovery from an ACL injury. This, in conjunction with his age (33) and sizeable wage, makes him anything but an attractive market opportunity.
It seems that the only way for Real Madrid to be able to offload the pair is by actively forcing them out, but it seems unlikely that they would take such a drastic step this late in the window for fear of upsetting squad harmony.
