Barcelona coach Xavi refused to confirm whether Frenkie de Jong had a future at the club past the summer transfer window.

De Jong has found himself in the midst of fierce speculation, with Manchester United and Chelsea both interested in his services.

So far the Dutchman has declined to leave Camp Nou, while the club is keen to cash in and free up further wages as they struggle with La Liga's salary cap impositions.

And speaking on Friday, Xavi admits he does not know what will happen with the midfielder.

"De Jong is an important footballer and at this time he is in the squad, so I can use him and will do so as long as the situation does not change.

"The market will remain open until August 31 and I don't know what is going to happen.

"Not with Frenkie, nor with any of the squad."

Will Aubameyang be leaving?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has also been linked with a move to Chelsea, as manager Thomas Tuchel is reportedly keen for a reunion with his former charge at Borussia Dortmund.

Xavi gave a similar response when asked about the Gabon international, assuring that he would continue to play him as long as he is a Barca player.

"I count on him. I like Auba, he can help our football," he added.

"He is important because of how hard he works, he came here with great humility and I am delighted with him."

Barca kick off their La Liga campaign on Saturday at Camp Nou against Rayo, though they may have to wait until the last minute to find out whether they can register their new signings in time for the opener.
