Kylian Mbappe’s decision to reject a move to Real Madrid and instead stay at PSG was the major football transfer news talking point in May.

It was a spectacular U-turn from the World Cup winner, who has flirted with a move to the Spanish giants since breaking into the professional game with Monaco.

Real Madrid had made their desire to sign the attacker clear. A year earlier, they had made a bid in excess of €200 million for Mbappe, only for PSG to simply ignore the offer.

The French club bullishly predicted that their player would not leave for nothing and were ultimately proven right as the hometown hero signed a new three-year contract with the Parc des Princes club.

While money has been cited as a potential reason for his decision, the reality is that those closest to the deal state that there was not a world of difference between the contracts offered by the two clubs.

So why might Mbappe have elected to stay at PSG? One theory has been put forward that Real Madrid are simply too good.

Mbappe 'a man of challenges'

Los Blancos, for instance, picked up their 14th European Cup thanks to a 1-0 win over Liverpool last weekend.

Following that victory, a Tweet appeared stating: “This is why Mbappe was right to stay at PSG. What is the added value of going to a Spanish and European champion? None. In Paris, he can make history.”

It was a tweet that his mother liked.

Similarly, Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of France, allegedly told the forward: “You haven’t won the Champions League with PSG. Real Madrid won it 13 times. You are the man of challenges.”

Mbappe, it seems, has been inspired by this test, with Real Madrid’s success apparently counting against them in this rare case.
