Leroy Sane has been considered as one of the best wingers in world football since leaving Schalke for Manchester City in 2016, but there’s no doubt that he’s endured a tricky patch of form recently.

After starting the 2023-24 season on fire, the Germany international has gone missing in front of goal recently and Bayern Munich’s title chances have fallen away during his woeful goalless drought.

Thomas Tuchel may even be sacked before the second-leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Arsenal if the Bavarians suffer defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal make Joshua Kimmich a major summer target

Bayern are now 16 points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race and Tuchel has conceded that Leverkusen are champions-in-waiting, with the Bavarians harbouring no hope of a comeback.

In fact, their final chance to secure silverware this season comes in the form of the Champions League.

Leroy Sane’s goalless drought in numbers

Throughout this campaign, Sane has been a regular starter alongside Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala, but his current goalless drought is extremely concerning.

The Bayern Munich winger is without a goal in his last 25 matches for club and country. His most recent goal in a competitive match came against Darmstadt in October, with Sane bagging a brace on the day.

Since then, Sane has taken 60 shots (19 on target) without hitting the back of the net.

The 28-year-old will be hoping to end this abysmal run against Arsenal in the Champions League, but will face a seemingly impenetrable defence that has conceded just five goals in 14 games since the start of 2024.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are currently the best centre-back pairing in world football, based purely on form, while Jorginho’s introduction alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in midfield has helped Arsenal’s backline immensely.

Bayern are certainly underdogs against Mikel Arteta’s side and they will need Sane to end his horrid run in front of goal or risk crashing out of the Champions League to end a dismal campaign by their usual standards.
