Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman has revealed that new head coach Julian Nagelsmann played a huge part in convincing him to sign a new contract extension with the club.

On January 12, the France international signed a deal that extended his current deal beyond its expiry date of summer 2023 through until 2027.

Not only did this quickly dispel any notion of the player leaving the club, despite regular reports linking Coman with a move to Chelsea or Manchester United, but it also confirmed that he was happy to commit his future to Bayern for the long-term.

And when asked about his reasons for staying put at Bayern rather than testing himself in England, Coman was quick to underline the significance new head coach Nagelsmann played in ensuring the winger that his future remained in Munich.

’Nagelsman would text me on Whatsapp’

“Trust - that's everything! When you have confidence, you feel comfortable,” said Coman in an interview with Sport1, when asked what it was that Nagelsmann offered him to stay put.

“He told me from the start that he supports me, that I'm very important to him and the team, and that he'd like to keep me.

“He also wrote to me on WhatsApp once. He is a coach who has a lot of exchanges with his players, not just with me.

“I like him and also his way of thinking about soccer. That made the decision easier for me.”

He added: “With my contract extension, I have made the best possible choice for me and my career.

“There were many things. I've experienced so much here, won so many titles. Of course, that makes you wonder if you should try something else.

“So I had to think and figure out what I wanted and where I wanted to go. That then doesn't always have to do with soccer alone, but also with personal interests. I simply needed time. And I took that time.”
