Borussia Monchengladbach director of football Max Eberl has admitted that the club may have to sell Manchester United and Manchester City transfer target Denis Zakaria in the summer.

The Foals have struggled to match the heights they reached last season and Marco Rose’s side are all but certain to miss out on finishing in the Bundesliga top four and subsequently qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

As such, the club’s budgets for the following campaign will be limited without the prize money from the continental competition and Eberl admits that while the club won’t be forced into making sales, they may decide to move players on that could see their contract expire the following summer.

“The club is still doing well. It is not the case that we have to sell players,” said Eberl in an interview with BILD

“Of course, there can be situations, for example, when we don’t want a contract to expire next year, that someone leaves us. But then we take in money that I can use to buy again.”

The two players in Gladbach’s squad that currently have contracts that expire at the end of next season are Matthias Ginter and Zakaria, with the latter likely to leave the club this summer if a decent offer comes in for him.

What clubs are interested in Zakaria?

Over the course of this season the two clubs that have reportedly been vying for Zakaria’s signature are Man Utd and Man City.

According to reports in England, the Swiss defensive midfielder could prove to be the ideal midfield enforcer to bolster the middle of the park for either of the two Premier League giants.

Another club that has recently joined the race are Arsenal, however it seems unlikely that Mikel Arteta would prioritise another defensive midfielder this summer after spending so much money on Thomas Partey last year.
