Bayern Munich defender David Alaba is set to leave the club next summer when his current contract expires, after the German champions confirmed they had rescinded their offer of an extension.

Speaking on the German TV show Blickpunkt Sport on Sunday, Bayern club president Herbert Hainer confirmed that negotiations between the club and Alaba’s representatives had stalled, forcing the club to remove their most recent offer.

“We have a new situation since this weekend,” said Hainer. “We submitted to David [Alaba] and his advisor some time ago what we think was a very good offer.

“During the last meeting we had said we wanted clarity by the end of October. We did not hear anything until yesterday and we contacted his advisor.

“The answer was that the offer was still unsatisfactory and we should think about it again. We then decided to take the offer completely off the table. This means there is no longer an offer.”

Due to the player’s availability for free next summer, speculation has been rife over Alaba’s future for much of the year. According to Calciomercato, the player’s agent Pini Zahavi has offered his client to Real Madrid, with Juventus and Inter Milan also interested in signing the defender.

Yet, speaking on Monday, Alaba was quick to distance himself from any potential moves at the end of the season and stated he hadn’t yet begun talking to other clubs, as well as his disappointment in Bayern making such a public statement about his contract situation.

“I found out about it from the news last night, nobody officially spoke to me about it. How it goes on remains to be seen. I really enjoy playing for FC Bayern and am happy to be here.

“I have not made any thoughts about my future because Bayern was always the first point of contact. I had no contact with other clubs for that reason.”

The 28-year old has been at the Bavarian club since 2008, where he came through Bayern’s youth academy and featured as a prominent member of the first team, first as a left-back and later as a central defender. In that time Alaba has won nine Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokal trophies and the Champions League twice.

Yet, despite winning every competition available to him as a Bayern player, the Austrian international is only now just reaching his peak years as an established defender and will surely be considering his options and where the next chapter in his career will be.
