Frank Lampard deserves the permanent Chelsea manager job over Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, according to beIN Sports presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray.

Lampard returned to Chelsea this month as a caretaker boss until the end of the season following the sacking of Graham Potter.

However, the former legendary midfielder has endured a dismal second reign in charge so far after losing his opening three games.

Lampard was handed the job back instead of hiring either Julian Nagelsmann or Luis Enrique permanently and immediately.

Nagelsmann is still the favourite to get the job for real in the summer, and this is something that Keys and Gray feel is unfair.

What did Keys and Gray say?

"One of the candidates is Julian Nagelsmann. What has he got that the Chelsea legend that is Frank Lampard has not?" Keys said on beIN SPORTS.

"A guy that knows the club inside out, a guy that Chelsea fans think the world of. What has Nagelsmann done? Okay, he's won the Bundesliga, but he'd be hard pushed not to as Bayern Munich coach, but nothing else. So what makes him preferible? Is it because he's German? Young? Rides a skateboard?"

Gray agreed with Keys, adding: "What makes Nagelsmann better, I don't know. Modern day owners of English Premier League clubs have a fixation with a foreign name, a foreign coach, that they would be better and be better equipped. [That they] bring a brand of football that we can't produce [with] British coaches, which is a nonsense.

“But there can be no other reason that Nagelsmann should be rated higher than Frank. Yes, he's won a Bundesliga title, but you're right, you'd be hard pushed not to with Bayern Munich."

Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich at the end of last month, having been appointed in the summer of 2021. He was replaced by another former Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel.

Things won’t get any easier for Lampard to stop his losing start as Chelsea play Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge next in the second leg of their quarter final.
