Barcelona manager Xavi says that Robert Lewandowski’s age is not a problem ahead of a potential summer transfer.

According to widespread reports, Lewandowski has asked Bayern Munich to allow him to leave this summer.

Barcelona are leading the chase for his signature and it was reported in Germany on Saturday that they have agreed a three-year contract for Lewandowski.

Lewandowski turns 34 in August and there have been some who wonder whether it is wise to give a player of his age a contract that will end when he is nearly 37.

But Xavi has no doubts that age is just number, citing some other legends of the sport.

What did Xavi say about Lewandowski?

“I’m not going to talk about Lewandowski now. But I should remind you, I agreed to sign Dani Alves. All we care about is the professional mentality,” Xavi said at the press conference ahead of Sunday’s game against Getafe.

“Players like Zlatan, Modric, Ronaldo, Messi…they are still playing at a high level. Age is not an obstacle.”

Lewandowski’s contract at Bayern expires in 2023, and it seems he has no desire to pen an extension.

Bayern are desperate to keep him and president Herbert Hainer told Bild on Friday: "Robert Lewandowski has a contract with Bayern until June 2023 - and he will fulfill it.”

Saturday’s Bundesliga clash with Wolfsburg could be Lewandowski final match for Bayern.

The Poland star has enjoyed another fantastic season for Bayern, scoring 49 goals in 44 games in all competitions.

Since joining Bayern in 2014 on a Bosman Transfer from Borussia Dortmund, he has 343 goals in 373 games.

He has also won eight straight Bundesliga titles and two awards as FIFA’s Best player in the world. He is set to retain the European Golden Shoe this season.
