Arsenal target Edson Alvarez will not be leaving Ajax in January despite transfer links to numerous clubs, Ajax boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed.

The Mexican has played in various positions for the Amsterdam giants since his emergence 18 months ago and has attracted the attention of a whole range of interested parties, from Arsenal to the likes to Valencia and Scottish champions Celtic.

The defender, who can also play in a holding midfield position, has yet to push for a move but has often stated his ambition to move to a more prominent European league.

However, speaking after Ajax’s 4-2 victory over Den Haag on Sunday, ten Hag said of a possible transfer: “There is a good chance that he will stay at Ajax after the winter.

“This season is going to get even tougher in spring, with a game every three days, and we need a large dressing room to face it.”

The 23-year-old hasn’t played as much as he would like in recent seasons, and this year he has made just four starts in the Eredivisie, with the majority of his appearances coming off the substitutes bench.
