Man Utd legend Paul Scholes believes former manager Sir Alex Ferguson wouldn’t have signed many of the players the club has recruited in recent years.

Since Ferguson left the club in 2013 as Premier League champions, they have spent huge amounts of money to try and keep competitive at the top of the table.

Several players signed for massive fees like Harry Maguire and Paul Pogba are with the club at the moment, but are widely seen to be underperforming.

With domestic success eluding United for so long, Scholes believes recruitment has been one of the major issues.

Sir Alex was known for his unrivalled ability to continuously rebuild squads from scratch at Man Utd.

He would bring in in shrewd signings as well as spending money when it needed to be.

As for some of the incomings over the past few years, Scholes knows “for a fact” Ferguson wouldn’t have been interested in them.

“I think since Sir Alex went, signing players ever since those days has been wrong at times,” he told BT Sport.

“I know for a fact there have been a lot of players Sir Alex would not have chosen.”

Scholes reckons a director of football could be the solution, but isn’t sure about who could come in to improve things.

“It looks like they’re going to go down that route,” he continued, with regards to a director of football coming in.

“Whether they do, there’s been many names mentioned.

“Do you have someone from United in the past involved? I know Edwin van Der Sar has been mentioned who has done a great job at Ajax. I really don’t know what the answer is.”

Scholes was acting as a pundit during Man Utd’s Champions League win over Basaksehir.

Domestically, United have struggled and are currently down in 10th after winning just half of their Premier League matches so far.
