Marcus Rashford got his career at Barcelona off and running on Thursday with a brilliant double that helped Hansi Flick’s side claim a 2-1 Champions League victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The attacker had not scored for the Catalans since completing his summer loan move from Manchester United, yet an injury to Lamine Yamal opened the door for him to start.

Rashford responded with two second-half goals, the first a fine header, the second a thunderous shot that crashed into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

It was a brace that went some way to justifying his decision to leave United, where he had been exiled by head coach Ruben Amorim after a fallout last December.

The 27-year-old even went so far as to reduce his wages in order to ease through his move to Barcelona, and after scoring twice against Newcastle, he said that decision is now paying off.

Asked how many seasons he would like to stay with the Blaugrana, he sent a very clear message to Man Utd and Amorim: “As many as possible. We will see.

“I have to focus on do trying to do my job and trying to help the team in whichever way I can.”

Flick reveals why Barcelona signed Rashford

Barcelona boss Flick was delighted to see the England star net two goals and explained the performances like this are why he was signed.

“When we got this chance, it was ok: we have to do it,” Flick told the media. “I spoke with him before everything went the right way. I said: I want to have you in my team and I said, I’m happy.

“For me, he’s an outstanding player. Also the team helps him a lot. We controlled the match a lot with Pedri, Frenkie De Jong, it’s not easy to press us. That gives the striker the opportunity to find the right spaces behind the opponent’s last line and in front.

“He had this strength that he can use. His speed, his control with the ball and his finishing is unbelievable.”

The Barcelona media was also impressed, with Mundo Deportivo leading their coverage of the victory, ‘Killer Rashford’.

With Lamine doubtful for at least the next two games, the on-loan Man Utd star is likely to get more minutes to impress his new boss in forthcoming La Liga clashes against Getafe and Oviedo.
