‘Top-five night at Fenway’ – The World Cup crossover event MLB didn’t know it needed
The Boston Red Sox might have slumped to a 6-4 loss to the Texas Rangers as its disappointing season continued, but the event was hailed as a ‘top five night’ at Fenway Park as more than 10,000 Scotland supporters brought the iconic venue to life on a memorable evening in an otherwise forgettable season.
The Red Sox had scheduled Sunday’s game as Scottish Heritage Celebration Night and hoped that around 4,000 members of the Tartan Army, in the city as Scotland contests two World Cup fixtures in Foxborough over the space of six days. That target was smashed as fans from across the Atlantic travelled in their hordes for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the iconic venue.
It created a unique buzz for the two sides with losing records.
Rangers Suarez, the Red Sox starting pitcher, said: “They’re everywhere. I like the atmosphere. It’s like a soccer game.”
Jake Burger added: “Just having them out there and doing their chants, that was electric. It's a just a different energy when everybody's singing in unison, just having a good time. There's a sense of togetherness that sometimes we lose in American sports.”
Rangers manager Skip Schumaker added: “My bucket list is to be at a European game one day with my kids, and that was probably as close to it as you can get as far the atmosphere. That was pretty special.”
The Tartan Army turns Fenway into a World Cup party
The atmosphere was a stark departure from the typical Fenway experience. Fans were given free shirts combining the Red Sox logo and the Scotland flag, while the specially selected playlist was geared towards the travelling supporters, who were in loud singing voice before, during and after the game.
And the response seems to have been unanimously positive.
“I’m a season ticket holder. Go to 90% of games. Other than some playoff games, never been a night like this. And even then, playoff games are far more stressful than fun. This was a top-5 night at Fenway for me,” one fan posted on X.

“Not sure if I’m ever going to be part of a crowd like that again… Sox suck but the Scots made this game tolerable,” another Sox regular posted.

The Red Sox’s next home game, on June 19, clashes with Scotland’s second World Cup match, against Morocco in Foxborough.
