Confirmed: €60m star wants Man Utd summer transfer
Lisandro Martinez wants to leave Manchester United next summer following his recent outburst at the club’s hierarchy.
The Argentina international took aim at the Old Trafford board after the Red Devils’ 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with the defender frustrated by the lack of player investment over the summer.
Man Utd spent €173.2 million on Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer, but they opted against strengthening their options in defence or attack, much to Martinez’s anger.
The 28-year-old’s future at Old Trafford has been called into question in the aftermath of his outburst and The Athletic now claim that Martinez doesn’t want Man Utd to trigger the 12-month extension option in his current contract.
The defender’s deal is due to expire next summer, but Man Utd have the option to extend his contract until June 2028 if they wish.
However, Martinez is eager to leave as a free agent, with a move to La Liga his preferred next step, while the Man Utd hierarchy are now unsure whether to trigger their extension option following his comments.
Lisandro Martinez apologises for interview outburst
Martinez’s initial outburst came during an explosive post-match interview with Amazon Prime Video after the loss to Atletico Madrid, and he subsequently refused to apologise in a statement posted on his Instagram account.
However, the Argentina defender met with Man Utd officials after team training on Thursday afternoon and talkSPORT claim that he has been fined for his comments, while he then released an apology for the interview.
“Today I met with the club's leadership and the manager,” Martinez, who joined Man Utd for just under €60m in 2022, wrote on social media.
“It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday's game.
“Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity. The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise.
“Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that.
“I know that every single person at Manchester United is doing everything possible to achieve our shared ambition: bringing the success that this club and its supporters deserve.
“With this situation now behind us, we are fully focused on winning together.”
