‘Better than the Premier League’ – Tottenham outcast Vicario makes Juventus wish clear

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has gone public on his desire for a permanent exit from the club, announcing that playing for Juventus is ‘worth more than the Premier League’.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper was a member of the Spurs side that successfully fought against relegation last season, yet he was not in the plans of compatriot Roberto De Zerbi for the current campaign, with Antonin Kinsky elected as the club’s new No.1.

Having lost his spot in North London, Vicario was loaned out to Juventus this summer and has started each of the club’s two Serie A matches, helping them to victories over Frosinone and Parma while keeping clean sheets in both games.

“Playing for Juventus is worth more than the Premier League,” Vicario told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’d sign a blank contract and stay here for life if I had the chance.

“I’d decided right now to stay for many years – I’m at the club of my dreams.

“We’ll see if that can happen, but my only focus must be on helping the club, my team-mates and my coach to do their best.

“Juventus’ history is clear: we have to fight on all fronts to win.”

I’ve never felt second choice at Juventus – Vicario

Vicario finds himself in the unusual situation at Juve of knowing that he was not the club’s first choice in the transfer market this summer. The Turin giants attempted moves for both Liverpool’s Alisson and Emi Martinez, who was with Aston Villa at the time, only to be knocked back.

“I always hoped to join Juventus, but I can't control the transfer market. I spent a preseason without playing any friendlies, confident in the transfer,” he explained.

“I waited for Juve, but I never felt like a second-string player. If I'm here, it's because the club and the coach chose me and wanted me as Juventus' goalkeeper. It was my goal, and I achieved it; all the other talk is just idle chatter. The present counts, not the past.”

What comes next?

Vicario remains under contract at Tottenham until 2028 but his future most likely lies away from Spurs after a difficult campaign with the club.

He was notably dropped by Igor Tudor for the Champions League last-16 clash against Atletico Madrid but was substituted on after 17 minutes to replace Kinsky, who had made a series of errors as Tottenham went 3-0 down inside quarter of an hour.

Vicario did, however, lose his place under De Zerbi when injury forced him to undergo surgery, with Kinsky bouncing back so impressively that he retained the gloves for the critical matches against Chelsea and Everton at the end of the season.

A strong season with Juve should ensure he remains in Italy. Juventus hold a €10 million option to purchase Vicario during his loan spell, and with an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €19.4m, the odds appear stacked that he has played his last game for Tottenham.
