Rangers in shock transfer twist as Fabrizio Romano says 'agreement reached'

Rangers are in talks with Besiktas over a late move for Nicolas Raskin, but there is major confusion over whether the deal will go ahead.

The Belgium international has been one of the Ibrox club's most prized possessions in recent years and was the subject of major interest last summer, so much so that he was briefly axed from the squad by then-manager Russell Martin.

Fast forward a year and Raskin's future is once again up in the air. It looked very likely that he would leave Rangers after his impressive World Cup performances, but despite links with clubs in the Premier League and Serie A, no move materialised.

Those transfer windows have now closed, but others remain open. In Turkey, clubs can still do business until Friday, while teams in Scotland are permitted to make signings until Thursday.

In recent hours, Besiktas appeared to be closing in on a surprising deal for Raskin that would have seen him initially join the Istanbul outfit on loan. In fact, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano claimed that a verbal agreement has been reached, leaving the final decision in the hands of the player.

Raskin deal on or off?

However, according to Sky Sports, there isn't, and never was, an agreement for the transfer of Raskin. Rangers bosses turned down Besiktas' loan approach.

The Super Lig club offered a "significant loan fee" and included an option to buy in the proposal, but this bid was knocked back, and the deal is currently considered "off."

That doesn't mean that Besiktas won't return with a fresh proposal, but at this point, it isn't clear that they will. They obviously still have plenty of time to offer a different formula, while Rangers could, in theory, still source a replacement.

The report adds that Raskin has been tracked by numerous European clubs throughout the summer and also confirms that a satisfactory offer has yet to materialise for the 25-year-old.

Raskin has made four appearances under Derek McInnes in this nascent season. As things stand, he is expected to be part of Rangers' squad to face Falkirk in the Premiership tonight.
