Malick Fofana’s transfer saga was proof that Deadline Day can still deliver moments of jaw-dropping drama the sort of which has become rare in the increasingly organised world of modern football.

In barely 12 hours, the Lyon winger moved from being a target for Arsenal to Sunderland’s latest signing via double transfer hijack, a medical for an unknown club and two jets parked to take him to two different destinations.

His move to Sunderland from Lyon had as many twists and turns as Enzo Fernandez’s protracted transfer to Manchester City in a story that harked back to the more chaotic and unpredictable Deadline Days of old.

Fofana’s dramatic Deadline Day move

Rarely has such a complex narrative been played out in such a short timeframe.

It was a saga that really began almost a week earlier when Lyon were sent out of the Champions League by Fenerbahce due to a 2-1 home defeat. The French side paid the ultimate price for conceding two goals in a handful of first-half minutes, and though Fofana himself led the revolt, OL crashed out.

His future in Lyon had hinged on Champions League qualification due to the finances involved. With his side eliminated, a black hole in the budget that needed to be plugged by a sale. With few profitable assets, Paulo Fonseca’s side were forced to turn to the Belgium international, who had clearly been their outstanding player in the early matches of the season. A bitter blow.

Bayern Munich and Liverpool were among the clubs previously credited with an interest, yet Arsenal emerged in the early hours of Deadline Day as the clear frontrunners to swoop.

But sporting director Andrea Berta was unwilling to meet Lyon’s asking price, though. Whether he overplayed his hand or genuinely believed that Fofana was not worth his price tag is unclear. What is evident was that the deal rapidly collapsed.

Next came Sunderland. Headed by owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, who also has a minority stake in Marseille, and head coach Regis Le Bris, who made his name in management in Ligue 1, the Black Cats were only too aware of Fofana’s qualities. They quickly appeared to wrap up a deal. “Here we go,” said Fabrizio Romano.

Then came the twist. With Fofana on the brink of moving to the Stadium of Light, Crystal Palace jumped in to hijack the deal. The winger even underwent a medical, though he did not know which club he was taking it for.

A metaphorical situation became a literal one when two jets were said to be waiting for him at Lyon airport, one ready to take him to the north-east and Sunderland, the other London and Crystal Palace.

But ultimately, the Black Cats prevailed. It was ‘always Sunderland’ claimed the club as they announced the deal. Of course it was.

The deal was worth an initial €30 million, plus a potential €5m in bonuses. Given Fofana’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has hovered around €40m for much of the last year, this is an excellent price.

What really happened behind the Fofana transfer?

French investigative journalist Romain Molina has been highly critical of the situation behind the scenes, pointing the finger at Fofana’s agency Roc Nation as well as certain relatives, for the chaotic situation.

“The player abruptly changed his mind between Palace and Sunderland after the Black Cats promised a more generous commission to the agents (knowing that Roc Nation employs Fofana's uncle, who then spoke to his nephew...),” Molina tweeted.

“Don't look for the coaches or the projects, just look at who's going to pocket what around the players.”

He subsequently revealed Crystal Palace had raised their offer in terms of commissions and salary, stating: “No idea what happens next except that the outcome is going to be very good for Roc Nation and the player’s uncle.”

In short, it is Molina’s opinion that Fofana was steered towards the richest commission and not the most suitable club for his career, with the two Premier League teams played off against each other to increase this figure.

Was Sunderland really the right move for Fofana?

For better or for worse, it will be Sunderland where Fofana takes his next steps as a professional.

He arrives in the Premier League as a player whose qualities – explosiveness, directness and fearlessness - should be highly valued, but the manner of the transfer leaves questions as to whether the long-term good of his career was prioritised in the deal.

There is no doubt that the Black Cats have captured a hot prospect at an excellent price, particularly given the climate of free-spending that has taken hold in the Premier League this summer.

Fofana’s job is now to make everyone forget about the Deadline Day drama that marked his move to Sunderland, and the only way he can do that is by performing on the field.
