Chelsea and Manchester City have an agreement in principle over a deal for Enzo Fernandez, with the midfielder set to move for €140 million (£120m), according to credible sources.

Enzo has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge for several months, with the Argentina international star having initially pushed himself towards Real Madrid.

Although the prospect of his dream switch to the Bernabeu faded during the summer, City rapidly emerged as another option, and now a late deal is set to be completed before the transfer deadline, according to Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio.

Enzo sets transfer record at Chelsea and Man City

Enzo is set to become Chelsea’s record sale, with the Londoners having placed an asking price of €140m on the head of the 25-year-old, according to reports from BBC Sport.

Such a figure will eclipse the €137m they paid for Morgan Rogers in July, and also the €135m that City previously spent signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest - the Manchester club's record signing before this move.

Only Alexander Isak’s move from Newcastle to Chelsea last summer, at €145m, is more expensive in Premier League history.

Chelsea’s potential replacements for Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea did not want this transfer going down to the wire and had previously set City a deadline early in August to have made a formal bid by.

The Blues’ stance was made precisely so they wouldn’t have the type of last-minute transfer scramble that currently faces them. While they are in advanced talks with Roma midfielder Manu Kone, that deal faces the prospect of collapsing as Gian Piero Gasperini, the head coach of the Serie A club, is unhappy at the prospect of losing such a player late in the transfer window.

Lamine Camara remains a possibility from Monaco, meanwhile, although talks there have also proven complicated in recent hours.

Chelsea’s Deadline Day business

Chelsea’s main aim, beyond signing a replacement for Enzo, in the closing hours of the window is to cut down the size of Xabi Alonso’s first-team squad.

Tosin Adarabioyo is set to leave for Tottenham in a deal worth £7 million (€8m) while Mykhailo Mudryk is set to join Spurs in a loan deal that is designed to give him first-team opportunities.

The Blues have already offloaded €277m worth of talent this summer, with Enzo’s sale set to make this Chelsea’s biggest window ever in terms of sales.
