Deadline Day recap

Chelsea experienced a hugely dramatic - and ultimately disappointing - Deadline Day, with a last-minute deal for AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara collapsing after the Ligue 1 side allegedly reneged on an agreement for the transfer.

The Blues had been in on and off talks with Monaco for Camara all day. Chelsea were initially told that the Senegal international was not for sale, but everything changed when complications arose in Everton's pursuit of Folarin Balogun.

Monaco needed money and to free up a non-EU spot, so they reopened talks with Chelsea for Camara when the Balogun deal was in the balance. An agreement was reached, but shortly thereafter, Everton also successfully renegotiated a deal for the American striker.

This prompted Monaco to pull the plug on the Camara deal, thinking that the Balogun deal would go through, but all parties ultimately ended up unhappy because the forward had a change of heart, leaving Everton without a striker, Monaco without money and Chelsea without a midfielder.

Camara was the preferred replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who joined Man City in a joint Premier League record deal worth €145m. Chelsea also offloaded Tosin Adarabioyo and Mykhailo Mudryk to Tottenham, Deivid Washington and Dario Essugo to Strasbourg, Robert Sanchez to Como, Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig and Dujuan Richards to Wimbledon on Deadline Day.

The only signing was Honest Ahanor, but he will only join for €46.7m next year. To circumvent Premier League loan restrictions, Chelsea pre-agreed a deal for 2027, with Atalanta loaning him to Crystal Palace in the meantime.

Who did Chelsea sign in the summer window?

Chelsea had an incredibly busy transfer window - yet again. In addition to Ahanor, Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for €138m and €8.75m, respectively.

They also brought in Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for €60.7m, Marco Palestra from Atalanta for €57m, Valentin Barco from Strasbourg for €40m, Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano for €25m, Danny Welbeck from Brighton for €5.85m and Jordan Henderson from Brentford on a free transfer.

Geovany Quenda (Sporting CP, €50m), Emmanuel Emegha (Strasbourg, €25m) and Dastan Satpaev (Kairat, €2.4m) joined in pre-agreed transfers.

Chelsea also shed a lot of deadwood, with 19 first-team stars departing either permanently or on loan, while there were also numerous exits from the academy. Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Cucurella and Liam Delap were the most high-profile sales.

Chelsea open Wijnaldum talks

Having failed to sign Lamine Camara, Chelsea are now exploring a deal for former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, Foot Mercato claims.

The 35-year-old is a free agent after leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq earlier this summer. Wijnaldum played alongside new Chelsea signing Jordan Henderson at both Liverpool and Al-Ettifaq.

It is asserted that Chelsea are considering Wijnaldum as an "emergency solution" after failing to bring in a replacement for Enzo Fernandez on Deadline Day. Wijnaldum, if a deal were to be agreed, would only sign a short-term contract.

Mystery target revealed

Chelsea had three targets to replace Fernandez on Deadline Day: Monaco's Camara, AS Roma's Manu Kone and a "mystery" option, whose identity has now been revealed.

Transfer specialist El Bobble writes that Chelsea made a late approach for Everton star James Garner as they were scrambling to bring in a midfielder before the deadline.

However, Everton rebuffed the approach, and Garner also showed no signs of wanting to leave. The 25-year-old had been linked with a return to Man Utd earlier in the summer, but nothing came of it.
