Man Utd Transfer News Today: Hall approach set to be made as Carrick targets Newcastle star
FootballTransfers runs through the latest Man Utd transfer news, rumours and gossip, including updates on Lewis Hall, Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford.
Carrick makes call over Zirkzee
Michael Carrick made an intriguing first team decision for Manchester United’s friendly win over Atletico Madrid that all but signified the end of the road for one of his players.
United beat Atletico 2-1 with Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice after being fielded as a striker, leaving Joshua Zirkzee on the bench until the 73rd minute.
A host of young players also came on ahead of Zirkzee and it is expected the Dutchman will leave United this summer after failing to convince Carrick of his credentials, with the team against Atletico being a telling sign.
Juventus are thought to be leading the race for Zirkzee but United would prefer to sell the forward permanently, while the Italian side are thought to prefer a loan.
Flick admits Barcelona will ‘miss’ Rashford
Marcus Rashford was also missing from the United team but that is due to the forward still being on his extended break after his involvement with England at the 2026 World Cup.
Rashford belatedly confirmed on social media that he would not be returning to Barcelona after his loan spell there last season and the Spanish club’s coach Hansi Flick admitted he would ‘miss’ the 28-year-old.
"You don't know what happens with players who are on loan - our situation is not easy for that,” Flick said.
"I appreciate working with him [Rashford]. He is a fantastic player and a fantastic person. The team miss him, I will miss him, but it is life. This is what we have to accept."
Man Utd preparing Hall approach
Manchester United want to sign Lewis Hall and are putting together a deal to try and sign the Newcastle defender.
Hall has emerged as a top target for United to strengthen at left-back and Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie confirmed that, while a deal is in its early stages and will be difficult to do, a proposal could be sent to Newcastle.
Speaking on YouTube, Downie said: “Manchester United do want to sign Lewis Hall, they’re considering putting something together to try and sign him. They think it will be difficult to do, and it will be difficult to do because Newcastle absolutely do not want to sell him.
“It’ll be a lot of money. Will they be able to do a deal? I don’t know. But they are exploring the possibility of it, so it’s in its early stages but it’s a link that will not go away.”
Everton eye United youngster
Everton are interested in Man United youngster Ethan Wheatley, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Toffees are reportedly preparing a formal approach for the 20-year-old, who has made three Premier League appearances for United but none in the last two years.
Wheatley spent time on loan at Northampton and Bradford in League One last season but he scored just three times in 33 matches.
United had been weighing up Championship loan approaches for Wheatley but Everton are now set to make their move, although a deal is in its early stages.
