Chelsea to sign Serie A's most promising defender in €50m deal

Chelsea are closing in on a deal to sign Atalanta wonderkid Honest Ahanor, who is among the most promising young defenders in Europe.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that the Blues had begun exploring a transfer for the 18-year-old Serie A sensation. Ahanor has been playing senior football since age 16 - despite being a centre-back.

After impressing in limited minutes at Genoa, Atalanta signed him for €16 million last summer, and he continued on his upward trajectory in Bergamo. By late 2025, there were tentative links with Chelsea and other Premier League suitors.

And it seems that the Stamford Bridge club have now formalised their interest in the teenager. According to Fabrizio Romano and Gianluca di Marzio, Chelsea are making progress in discussions with Atalanta over a deal.

Romano claims that personal terms have already been agreed with the youngster, while Di Marzio adds that the fee to sign him will likely exceed €40 million. Discussions are advancing smoothly as the two clubs have a strong relationship after the Marco Palestra deal earlier in the window.

Atalanta agree to Ahanor sale

Somewhat surprisingly, Atalanta have changed their tune on Ahanor in recent days. When Brighton made a formal offer to sign him earlier in the summer, the response from La Dea was blunt: he is not for sale.

"We want to keep our jewels," director Cristiano Giuntoli said in response to Brighton's approach. "There are many rumours around, but we do not want to sell anyone."

Yet this week, he admitted that a transfer is possible. "There's a lot of interest in some of our players, but we haven't received any offers yet, not even for Ahanor. If so, we'll evaluate it. We'll be very careful about what happens."

Chelsea's development plan for the youngster is not entirely clear yet. Given that the Blues are actively looking to offload several defenders, it seems doubtful that he would immediately become a first-team player should a deal indeed be agreed.

Indeed, Romano suggests that he could be sent to a different Premier League side for a year. Alternatively, BlueCo sister club Strasbourg still have a loan spot available, while he could also potentially remain at Atalanta for another season.

Ahanor is one of Europe's brightest talents

Regardless of what Chelsea intend to do with Ahanor, it is clear that they're getting one of Europe's best prospects. The fact that he already has two senior Italy caps under his belt - as an 18-year-old centre-back - nicely illustrates this.

In fact, the teenager would likely already have more caps to his name were it not for the archaic law preventing the children of non-Italian parents from acquiring citizenship until age 18, even if, like Ahanor, they were born in the country.

The centre-back started 19 games for Atalanta last season, leading to data analytics firm SciSports recognising him as one of the most improved players in his position via its SciSkill system.

A player's SciSkill is calculated by analysing hundreds of in-game data points. In Serie A, only Como's Jacobo Ramon and Genoa's Alessandro Marcandalli enjoyed a higher positive SciSkill development after the turn of the year - both are already in their 20s.

Ahanor is the most improved teenage defender in Serie A and the third-most improved player in any position in the Italian top flight in his age group. He is also among the most improved teenage defenders in the world, with SciSports ranking him eighth.

Earlier this week, FootballTransfers analysed the 18-year-old's sky-high SciSports potential, which puts him among the most promising players in the world. He is the teenage defender with the fifth-highest potential and could comfortably become better than Levi Colwill, who is currently Chelsea's best centre-back.

Weirdly, Chelsea already have one of the best left-footed centre-back prospects on their books after sister club Strasbourg signed Karim Coulibaly. The German's potential is thought to be even higher than Ahanor's.

Elite left-footed centre-backs are a rare commodity - with Colwill, Coulibaly and Ahanor, Chelsea could soon have a luxury of options in that position.
