Arsenal’s anticipated signing of Bruno Guimaraes could take a stunning u-turn after a development at Newcastle that may see the club captain reconsider his plans to leave.

Guimaraes is believed to be in advanced talks to join the Gunners after a deal worth €90 million was reportedly agreed with Newcastle on Friday following weeks of speculation.

Sources on Tyneside have continued to insist that a formal offer still hasn’t been submitted by Arsenal and that Guimaraes is expected to report to Newcastle’s training camp in La Masia on Sunday upon his return from holiday.

The situation was made even more tense by the unexpected resignation of Eddie Howe this week, although Newcastle had been aware of the 48-year-old’s decision for a number of weeks and have already lined up his replacement in Matthias Jaissle.

Jaissle is set to be named as Howe’s successor in the coming hours and his appointment could lead to a twist in the Guimaraes saga, with The Chronicle reporting that the new boss has pencilled in face-to-face talks with the Brazilian upon his arrival.

Guimaraes will report for training on Monday, at which point Jaissle – who is expected to be in charge by then – will look to sell his vision and philosophy to the 28-year-old in the hopes of convincing his club captain to stay this summer.

Newcastle have been adamant that Arsenal’s interest in Guimaraes has all been via intermediaries and third parties, which has led to reports aiming to unsettle the midfielder and force the club into a sale.

However, Newcastle have no desire to lose their star man, particularly for the rumoured fee of €90m, of which a portion will go to Guimaraes’ former club Lyon as part of a sell-on clause.

Guimaraes has asked Newcastle to allow him to join Arsenal, with personal terms already in place, and all parties are keen to resolve the situation as quickly as possible to avoid it carrying on into the new season.

Despite his desire to leave, Guimaraes is not believed to be considering forcing a move by going on strike and he is contractually obliged to return to training on Monday, having been allowed to fly to Spain directly from his home in Brazil instead of with the Newcastle squad, who departed from Tyneside on Friday.
