Arsenal agree €8m deal to sell Norgaard to Everton – David Ornstein

Everton have reached an agreement in principle to sign Arsenal midfielder Christian Norgaard, David Ornstein has confirmed.

Norgaard joined the Gunners last summer for €11 million but only played 102 minutes of Premier League football, mainly being used as a squad player in cup competitions.

The 32-year-old is in the last year of his contract and Arsenal have opted to cash in on him amid speculation that they are closing in on a deal for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Everton are set to pay £7m (€8.2m) for Norgaard and The Athletic have revealed that the Danish international is set to undergo a medical next week once the deal has been formally agreed.

Norgaard made his name in England with a six-year stint at Brentford, in which he captained the Bees and made nearly 200 appearances before moving to the Emirates.

The midfielder will become Arsenal’s second major departure of the summer after Leandro Trossard and should accelerate the pursuit of Guimaraes as a replacement.

Following news of Norgaard’s exit, a deal for Guimaraes is believed to be near completion for a fee of around €90m despite the 28-year-old being pencilled in for talks with incoming Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle on Monday.

Guimaraes is scheduled to fly to La Masia on Sunday to link up with Newcastle’s squad for their pre-season training camp, with the core group of players having left on Friday from Tyneside.

Newcastle insist that no formal offer has been submitted by Arsenal and that Guimaraes is still expected to report to training despite telling the club that he wishes to join the Gunners.

It also remains to be seen whether Guimaraes opts to push a transfer through by going on strike in a similar situation to Alexander Isak last summer, although the Brazilian is not thought to be going to such lengths at this time.

Arsenal will look to conclude the deals for both Norgaard and Guimaraes next week before focusing their attention on a move for Vinicius Junior, with the winger’s future at Real Madrid still uncertain.
