Newcastle agree €60m Manzambi signing: He’s the perfect player for the Premier League
Newcastle have struck a €60 million agreement to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, though the Switzerland international midfielder is not a like-for-like replacement for either Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes.
Eddie Howe’s side have agreed a deal worth €60m for the exciting Manzambi, who will sign a long-term contract at St James’ Park, according to Sky Sport Deutschland.
The Magpies have beaten Aston Villa to the signing of the 20-year-old, with the Birmingham club having been prompted into action following Amadou Onana’s serious knee injury.
Breakout season
Manzambi was one of the breakout stars in the Bundesliga last season, with the youngster scoring seven times and creating nine more across all competitions for his side.
He has continued that form into the World Cup, with three goals and two decisive passes across just 200 minutes before suffering a knee injury that prevented him from featuring in the last-16 victory over Colombia on penalties.
This output saw him earmarked as a star of the summer transfer market, and Newcastle have effectively won the race for the player, who remains focused on the World Cup for the time being, according to the German reports.
Manzambi: An exciting player with an ‘elite’ mentality
Manzambi, meanwhile, won’t be a replacement for Tonali, who signed for Tottenham in a £92.5 million (€107m) deal, or even Bruno Guimaraes, who is agitating for a move to Arsenal.
Although he has been used as a deeper-lying midfielder by Freiburg at times this season, it has been his attacking qualities that have seen him stand out, making him a more natural alternative for Joe Willock or Joelinton at Newcastle.
Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy believes his arrival represents excellent business for the Premier League side.

“At Freiburg, Johan Manzambi was the best player on the pitch. At all times. Whether SCF were playing in a proper competitive match or even in sessions at their training ground. Partly because of his ability on the ball, but also because of his relentless desire to improve,” he told FootballTransfers.
“Manzambi's mentality is elite in a world where tactics are more important than ever, and at Freiburg, he would ask his coaches for extra detail and longer individual sessions so he could get better and know more.
“His €60m transfer fee absolutely obliterates Freiburg's biggest previous sale, but it could turn out to be a bargain for Newcastle as his all-round toolkit in midfield makes him the perfect player for the Premier League.
“Manzambi can do absolutely everything in the middle of the park, as he showed in the Europa League and then the World Cup against the calibre of opponents he will be playing week in, week out when he lines out for the Magpies.”
Newcastle’s are pursuing a new transfer policy of signing up-and-coming young players, yet they have struck gold Manzambi, who is ready to prove that his World Cup exploits are simply his norm.
