Marcus Rashford is poised to return to Manchester United after the World Cup, but his future continues to hang in the balance.

While United are ready to welcome him back for pre-season, the Red Devils remain open to a sale after Barcelona refused to take up the €30 million purchase option in his loan agreement last season.

It had indicated that Man Utd were unwilling to negotiate this fee due to the belief that they will be able to get a better price elsewhere later in the market, though a new report from Spain has indicated that they were willing to make some concession to the Blaugrana on the sale of Rashford.

United wanted Bernal swap

Man Utd tried to have Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal installed in the deal, according to ‘reliable sources’ contacted by Mundo Deportivo. In this case, they would have been willing to offer concessions on the €30m price on Rashford.

Barca are said to have refused this proposal outright while Bernal is said to have had ‘zero interest’ in the deal, insisting that he is not seeking a move away from Camp Nou this summer.

United appear to have accepted that this route to selling Rashford is definitively blocked. They have since completed moves to sign Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively, and while they are still tracking a third central midfield signing, such a deal is likely to see them move for a marquee player and not a prospect like the 19-year-old Bernal.

What does this mean for Rashford?

All of this does not help Rashford. While United have shown a willingness to include him in pre-season, the overriding sentiment at Old Trafford is that his high wages mean that they will continue to prioritise a transfer for him this summer.

The likes of Tottenham and Aston Villa have previously been linked with a move, but after the big spending from Roberto De Zerbi’s side, a return to the Birmingham club, where he spent the second half of 2024/25 on loan, looks likeliest.

Rashford may need to wait for Morgan Rogers to depart Villa for that switch to be unlocked, with his England colleague having already agreed terms to move to Arsenal.
