Manchester United are reportedly ready to ramp up their pursuit of England defender Lewis Hall following news that Eddie Howe has decided to leave his role as Newcastle United head coach.

The Magpies boss has informed the club of his desire to take a break from coaching and his departure is set to be formally announced shortly, with Al-Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle expected to be unveiled as his replacement ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Newcastle have already sold Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon so far this summer, to Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona respectively, and club captain Bruno Guimaraes is also keen to secure an exit amid significant transfer interest from reigning Premier League champions Arsenal.

The aforementioned Hall is open to leaving too, and Man Utd are currently regarded as the frontrunners to secure his signature.

Chelsea, who sold Hall to Newcastle back in 2024, have also been credited with interest in the 21-year-old, but Man Utd are leading the race to sign him and The Sun report that Michael Carrick’s side are now weighing up a formal approach amid the ongoing turmoil at St James’ Park.

The Red Devils have earmarked left-back as a key priority for the summer window, with the club keen to sign a player capable of challenging Luke Shaw for a starting XI place, and Hall is regarded as the best option available following his immense form since his arrival at Newcastle.

The England star, who was harshly excluded from Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, is seen as the ideal long-term replacement for Shaw and it has previously been reported that he would be open to completing an Old Trafford switch ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Despite his World Cup snub, Hall remains one of the best left-backs in the Premier League and at just 21 years old, he has plenty of room to develop even further.

The Newcastle star is already an impressive two-way full-back and his lung-busting runs from deep would provide Man Utd with an added attacking dimension they currently lack with Shaw.

Furthermore, Hall has consistently proven his ability as an immensely difficult defender to beat out wide and his all-round skillset would be extremely useful at Old Trafford, especially if they are able to finalise a deal for around his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €37.6 million.
