Dominik Szoboszlai agrees new Liverpool contract as Reds secure long-term future
Dominik Szoboszlai has agreed to sign a new contract with Liverpool in a deal that will keep him at Anfield for the long term.
The Reds have seen key leaders Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate depart on free transfers this summer but have acted quickly to give incoming manager Andoni Iraola a boost with a new deal for Szoboszlai.
The Hungary international was named as Liverpool’s Player of the Season for 2025/26, having excelled in his usual midfield role but also filling in expertly in an unfamiliar right-back position, underlining his importance to the club.
Szoboszlai has agreed a new contract with sporting director Richard Hughes and he is set to sign new terms with the club on Thursday, according to a report from Anfield Watch’s Bence Bocsak.
His current deal expires in 2028, so tying him down to this fresh agreement early lifts any pressure on negotiations.
Szoboszlai’s world-class 2025/26 season
Szoboszlai’s performance last season for the Reds was outstanding, leading to his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) climbing to a career-high €104 million.
Across the Premier League and Champions League, he contributed 11 goals and seven assists in 48 appearances for a Liverpool side that was not at its best.
Indeed, SciSports rates Szoboszlai as the best central midfielder in the Champions League last season.
His most valuable attribute under Arne Slot, though, was his versatility. Whether deployed as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, winger or full-back, he performed admirably in all roles.
Liverpool’s summer transfer plans
Liverpool currently have five players whose contract situations need to be resolved before the end of the season. Alisson, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas all have deals that expire in 2027 and could, therefore, depart for nothing.
Interest has come from Juventus in Alisson, but the Reds appear to have successfully fended this off, while Inter Milan have been linked with Elliott, who endured a frustrating loan spell with Aston Villa last season.
In the meantime, Iraola and Hughes are focused on improving Liverpool’s current squad, with winger, a central midfielder to partner Szoboszlai and a central defender among the highest priorities on the club’s shopping list.
The Reds have been told that a big-money deal for RB Leipzig wideman Yan Diomande may not be off the cards, while PSG’s Bradley Barcola is a strong alternative option for that role.
With neither of these transfers advanced, the news that Szoboszlai will extend his deal at Anfield marks a great boost for Iraola as he prepares for the beginning of the Premier League season next month.
