Arsenal develop interest in Ezri Konsa alternative - and it’s bad news for Chelsea

Arsenal have added Como defender Jacobo Ramon to their shortlist as they press ahead with plans to bolster their defence, according to BBC Sport.

The Times reported last week that the Gunners were keen to sign defensive cover for injured France international William Saliba.

The 25-year-old exacerbated a pre-existing back injury at the World Cup and will now spend an “extended period” on the sidelines.

Widespread reports understand Arsenal’s top defensive target is Aston Villa star Ezri Konsa, but his €70million (£60m) valuation remains prohibitive.

And now BBC Sport claims Arsenal are considering alternative names, including highly-rated Spain Under-21 international Ramon.

Ramon played a key role in Como securing UEFA Champions League football for next season by finishing fourth in Serie A last term.

The 21-year-old is one of a number of young players who have sparkled under the guidance of former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who manages Como.

However, BBC Sport understands there are clauses in Ramon’s contract which would make a move to Arsenal difficult.

Former Real Madrid centre-back Ramon is also a target for Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Chelsea, according to The Athletic.

The same publication understands the Blues are keen to sign a new centre-back this summer, with a host of targets on their wishlist.

A separate report from BBC Sport claims Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, however.

Chelsea have so far backed Xabi Alonso with the signings of Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers ahead of his maiden campaign in charge.

Arsenal meanwhile have signed Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier, while Piero Hincapie has turned his loan move into a permanent transfer.

BBC Sport understands Mikel Arteta’s side are also looking to strengthen in midfield this summer, as well as in defence.

The same publication claims the north London club are preparing to make an €82m (£70m) bid to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes.

However, The Times understands Newcastle are set to turn down the offer, reiterating that the Brazil international is not for sale.
