Arsenal and Man Utd forced into action after €40m Rafael Leao offer
Rafael Leao is ready to be saved from his troubled period at AC Milan thanks to an impending €40 million contract offer.
The Portugal international winger has been heavily linked with several clubs during the transfer window, with Arsenal and Manchester United particularly associated with the former Lille star.
Leao has made it clear that he wants to play in the Premier League, but he has a surprise offer from Galatasaray that will prompt an immediate response from the English giants.
Leao’s Milan discount explained
The situation of the 27-year-old is complicated. Although he has a release fee in his contract worth €175 million and was once touted as a potential Chelsea signing for €120m, Milan are willing to slash his price by greater than half. The Serie A outfit will accept something in the region of €50m for the player, who has two years left on his contract.
Leao has endured a disappointing season at San Siro and has frequently been the subject of jeers from the Rossoneri crowd. A return of 10 goals and three assists across all competitions represents a poor outcome for the forward, whose attitude has also been questioned.
This has resulted in him going on the market at a steeply discounted price.
What’s happening with Arsenal and Man Utd?
Arsenal and Manchester United have been flirting with a move for Leao, with the Gunners’ interest in the player exclusively revealed by FootballTransfers earlier this year.
But despite both Premier League giants monitoring his situation, neither has been inclined to move early in the transfer market.
Leao’s situation is about to be set in motion, though. According to Nicolo Schira, Galatasaray are ready to launch a major offensive in order to bring the forward to Istanbul. It would be a repeat of the opportunistic approach that the Super Lig side took in order to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli a couple of years ago.
The Turkish side are ready to finance the move seriously, too. Schira reports that Leao will be presented with a €10m per year contract offer that will run until 2026. Given that the Portuguese currently earns €7m annually in Milan, this represents a huge pay rise and significant security.
Ready to stall on transfer call
Leao’s priority remains the Premier League, and with neither Arsenal nor United apparently ready to make a move, it may well be that he attempts to stall on deciding over his future immediately.
Certainly, that is what Fabrizio Romano believes will be his tactic.
Speaking previously, the transfer expert explained: “The feeling from the player and those close to him is that the Premier League would be the dream destination. That is his priority.
“He has received calls from Turkish clubs in recent weeks, but he wants to wait because he believes the World Cup could create bigger opportunities.
“Leao feels his chapter at AC Milan is finished. His priority is the Premier League and then, as a second option, La Liga.
“At the moment there is nothing advanced with any Premier League club. There are no official bids and there are no concrete negotiations.
“I think the World Cup will be very important because Leao believes it can help open doors and create opportunities for his next move.
“Now his focus is on the World Cup and then we will see what happens with his future.”
Galatasaray may be ready to make their move, but it appears that Leao is unwilling to commit to a move until after the World Cup.
