Man Utd receive major Ederson boost as first summer signing draws closer
Ederson was scheduled to undergo a medical on Sunday ahead of completing his move to Manchester United, according to reports in Italy.
The 26-year-old is set to become the Red Devils’ first summer signing after they agreed a €40.5million (£35m) fee with Serie A side Atalanta in May, according to BBC Sport.
However, there were fears the completion of the transfer would be delayed after Ederson received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad after Roma defender Wesley sustained an injury on the eve of the tournament.
But according to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, Ederson was pencilled in for a medical at the weekend as his move to United draws ever-closer.
Ederson was an unused substitute as Brazil came from behind to draw 1-1 with Morocco in their World Cup opener on Saturday.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side went behind thanks to Ismael Saibari’s superb dinked finish after 21 minutes, before Vinicius Junior equalised with a thunderous effort into the far corner.
Ederson will be hoping to earn minutes in Brazil’s remaining two Group C fixtures against Haiti on Sunday, 20 June and Scotland four days later.
The former Salernitana ace joined Italian outfit Atalanta in 2022 and he has gone on to make 180 appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals.
Ederson had a huge hand in Atalanta winning their first major trophy in 61 years with victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the 2024 Europa League final.
United reportedly closing in on Fernandes signing
United meanwhile are pressing ahead with plans to sign another midfielder this summer, with The Times reporting they are poised to beat Arsenal to the signature of West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes.
The same publication claims Fernandes, a rare leading light in an otherwise torrid 2025-26 season for the relegated Hammers, is expected to cost €92million (£80m).
However, one man United do not appear to be signing is Elliot Anderson, with BBC Sport claiming they are backing away from their pursuit after rivals Manchester City had a second offer worth an initial €122m (£106m) rising to €138m (£120m) rejected last Thursday.
The same outlet understands Michael Carrick’s side are not interested in entering a bidding war for Anderson, who has reportedly made Man City his preferred destination.
A separate report from The Telegraph claims Nottingham Forest will only allow Anderson to leave if they receive an up-front figure which is close to the €144m (£125m) British record transfer fee Liverpool shelled out on Alexander Isak last summer.
Anderson is regarded as one of the Premier League's best central midfielders, with the 23-year-old playing a key role in Forest clinching top-flight survival last season. He scored four goals and recorded four assists in the league as Vitor Pereira's side finished 16th.
