Man Utd to receive transfer boost after major Ruben Amorim update comes to light
Manchester United will receive a boost to their summer transfer kitty if Ruben Amorim becomes AC Milan manager, according to The Telegraph.
Amorim has been out of work since being sacked by the Red Devils in January following a torrid 14 months in charge.
The Portuguese was replaced by Michael Carrick, who oversaw a huge upturn in form which saw United finish third in the Premier League.
While United are set to earn Champions League riches next season, they revealed in February that dismissing Amorim could end up costing them a staggering €18.4million (£15.9m) in compensation.
The compensation bill also includes the departures of Amorim’s coaching staff members Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro and Jorge Vital.
But that figure is expected to be reduced if Amorim takes over as Milan’s new head coach, with The Telegraph claiming the 41-year-old is expected to be named as Massimiliano Allegri’s replacement.
Milan sacked Allegri following an end-of-season collapse which saw them miss out of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, with the Serie A giants finishing fifth and one point behind fourth-placed Como.
Widespread reports have indicated Milan have also held talks with Oliver Glasner following his departure from Crystal Palace, while transfers specialist Fabrizio Romano claims the club are also interested in Al-Ahli head coach Matthias Jaissle.
The Telegraph understands Milan were initially keen on Andoni Iraola before the Spaniard was appointed as Liverpool’s new head coach at the start of the month.
Man Utd have made strengthening their midfield a priority
Should United save millions in compensation payments to Amorim, the club could look to allocate those funds towards their midfield rebuild.
The Times reported on Friday that the 20-time league champions are poised to beat Arsenal to the €92m (£80m) signing of West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes.
Fernandes, 21, is expected to leave the Hammers, who need to raise funds after suffering relegation to the Championship last season.
United have also agreed a deal with Serie A side Atalanta to sign Ederson for €40.5m (£35m), but the completion of the transfer is likely to be held up after the midfielder received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.
Carrick’s side were also interested in signing Nottingham Forest and England midfielder Elliot Anderson, but BBC Sport understands they are backing away from their pursuit after rivals Manchester City had a second offer worth up to €139m (£120m) rejected.
The same publication claims United are not interested in entering a bidding war for a player who does not have his heart set on moving to Old Trafford, with Anderson believed to favour a switch to managerless Man City.
BBC Sport understands City are in advanced talks with Chelsea over naming Enzo Maresca as their new head coach, with the Italian set to replace mentor Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
