Hayden Hackney: The Next Championship to Premier League Success Story?
Every season, it seems like there is a young English player standing out in the Championship, causing Premier League clubs to send scout after scout to trail what they hope will be the next big thing. Alex Scott, Adam Wharton, James Maddison, and Jarrod Bowen are just a handful of names that have made the leap to great success in recent memory.
In the last couple of seasons, all eyes have been firmly placed on Teesside, where a young midfielder from the northeast coast of England has been making the league his playground. Hayden Hackney is Middlesbrough’s great hope, and his press resistance, stamina, and crisp passing have made him invaluable to the side.
With the former UEFA Cup finalists failing to clinch automatic promotion in his absence, his importance has been underlined. The Teessiders collapsed without their main man, struggling at both ends of the pitch, but particularly in defence. The former Scotland underage international was not there to clean up in front of the back four. It looks now like his heart will be set on a move elsewhere.
A Transfer Too Late for Hackney’s International Ambitions
Hayden Hackney has now been the focus of two transfer “sagas”, with the midfielder’s loyalty to his boyhood club scuppering both. He was fancied by Portuguese giants Porto before he turned down a move to Ipswich Town, who pipped his Boro side to automatic promotion. Had he made the move to the continent, though, he may just have been in contention for a World Cup berth.
While England are not short of quality midfielders, particularly in that number six position that the Redcar man operates in, Hackney would have fancied his chances of playing his way into international contention. He has already helped England’s under-21s to success, and would have hoped to be around the senior squad for a side that is the third favourite in the betting on the World Cup.
Instead, the 23-year-old proved his colours are red and stayed with the side he has played for all his life. He would go on to be crowned Championship Player of the Season, but given the strength of the English national team in 2026, it is unlikely that this would see him considered for a shock ticket to North America. Rather, he will watch his midfield partner and USA man Aidan Morris with envy.
A Flurry of Bids Expected for a Man in Hot Demand
Now, Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson will be expecting an inbox full of bids for his star man. Having already been courted by some top clubs, the midfielder is also firmly on the radar of Manchester United. If Michael Carrick were to remain at Old Trafford beyond this season, it seems likely that he will be tempted to lure his former protege to the North West.
Carrick was the man who fully integrated Hackney into his Middlesbrough team, making him a focal part of a free-flowing side that fell just short of promotion in 2023. Now back at a club where he holds significant sway, he could persuade the moneymen to part with the £30 million and up that the Teesside club will want for their most coveted academy graduate since Stewart Downing. It appears those in charge are ready to approve a significant war chest.
United will not be the only side watching him, though. Brighton, Tottenham, and Everton have all been said to fancy the midfielder. He will have his pick of suitors should he decide the time is right to leave the Riverside. Given that he could earn a place at a European Championship partly hosted on home soil in 2028, he will likely want to escape the Championship and show he can do it in the Premier League.
If he does, his performances in the Championship suggest that he will take to the rigours of top-flight football like a duck to water. His engine and vision are second-to-none in the second tier, and he surely has the ability to perform on some of the biggest stages.
