Arsenal receive fresh message on €150m striker signing
Arsenal have been told to agree a deal for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez amid significant transfer competition from Barcelona.
The Argentina international, who is valued at over €150 million by Atleti, has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium for over a year and it’s understood that he is their top target for the summer amid their pursuit of a new centre forward to compete with Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz.
The 26-year-old has scored 49 goals in 106 games since his arrival at Atletico Madrid in 2024 and he has been earmarked to join Barcelona as their replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who has left the club upon the expiration of his contract.
Alvarez spent two years at Manchester City before his transfer to Diego Simeone’s side and Micah Richards has urged the Gunners to bring the Argentina striker back to the Premier League this summer as they look to win back-to-back English top flight titles.
“I don’t think they need a superstar signing for the sake of it. They have got to fit into what Mikel Arteta wants,” Richards told Metro.
“If they could get one of those signings over the line that would be a real statement of intent. They can’t rest on their laurels, they need to go again. They should be looking at Alvarez at Atletico Madrid.
“Yes, [Viktor] Gyokeres has done well in spells, [Kai] Havertz has scored important goals. But you need to go to the next level. When you look at what PSG have in terms of their forward line, look at what Man City have, Arsenal need to get to that next level and get whoever they want. They are challenging on all fronts now so it would be nice for the fans to have that statement signing.
“They only need one or two but they need to be high quality. It is no longer the case of needing squad players. I think the balance is just about right as it is and we knew for the most part what the best starting XI would be. But they can go one step more to make sure they are constantly challenging.”
Analysis: Who could Arsenal sign as an alternative to Julian Alvarez?
Despite Richards’ desire for Arsenal to bring Alvarez to the Emirates Stadium this summer, widespread reports from Spain have suggested that he is only interested in signing for Barcelona.
As a result, Arteta’s side may be required to pursue an alternative target, with Bournemouth attacker Eli Junior Kroupi understood to be firmly on their radar following a sublime debut season at the Vitality Stadium, in which he scored 13 Premier League goals.
FootballTransfers understands that Arsenal are also eager to sign Aston Villa superstar Morgan Rogers, while they have recently been linked with a move for fellow Englishman Morgan Gibbs-White, who enjoyed an excellent campaign for Nottingham Forest in 2025-26.
